Description

This article explores the development of the First Nation, Métis, and Inuit Indigenous Ontology (FNMIIO), an Indigenous-led thesaurus designed for use in cultural memory institutions across Canada. Rooted in the recommendations of the CFLA Truth and Reconciliation Committee, FNMIIO aims to provide respectful, community-driven terminology for describing Indigenous materials. The article outlines the project's background, methodology, challenges, and progress since the release of its first draft in June 2019. While still evolving, FNMIIO serves as a vital proof-of-concept, highlighting key issues and informing future steps toward its broader adoption and sustainability.
